FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Let’s get started with some of the most frequently asked questions we receive as we install synthetic turf in Augusta. Especially questions about caring for your turf in the freezing weather.

WHAT DOES SNOW DO TO SYNTHETIC TURF?

Snow will not have a major influence on your artificial grass. It’s totally okay to walk or play on it if there is a layer of snow. The blades might lay flat with the weight of the snow, but it generally bounces back up on its own or, in some cases, with a bit of additional help from a power broom. Snow will not alter the color or affect the synthetic lawn.

WILL FROST HURT MY ARTIFICIAL TURF?

No, frost won’t hurt artificial grass. The individual turf blades do freeze in extreme conditions, walking on the grass during the winter would not cause any concerns. Once spring comes and there’s no further forecast of frost, you can utilize a stiff broom to help it back to life.

DO I HAVE TO COVER MY SYNTHETIC TURF?

You do not have to cover your artificial turf, but you definitely can if an abnormally severe winter is forecasted in Augusta. Just remember that you won’t have to cover portions that are being used because ice can make tarps slippery and hazardous to walk on.

CAN I SHOVEL SNOW OFF ARTIFICIAL TURF?

No, you should avoid shoveling snow from your turf except when totally necessary. If you do need to shovel a path, choose a handheld blower to take care of any snow or debris.

CAN I USE SALT OR ICE MELT ON MY TURF?

You must never use any ice melt salt on your turf. Salt can plug up the holes in the backing system and badly affect your lawn’s drainage ability. The caustic salt and chemicals can also break down the backing system, leaving you with turf blades which start to pull away from the backing. We firmly suggest you to let snow melt on its own for the desired results.

WILL SNOW MELT FASTER ON ARTIFICIAL GRASS?

Artificial grass surfaces can be warmer than regular grass, that means that an inch or two of snow will melt quicker than it would on natural grass. Because synthetic grass is evenly distributed, it allows improved aeration to accelerate the snow-melting process.

DOES SYNTHETIC GRASS GET ICY?

Not necessarily, however, like regular grass, some artificial surfaces can become slippery if ice forms. Thus, you should use the same care you do walking on any other wintery surface, essentially if Augusta has been experiencing freezing rain.

WHAT STEPS SHOULD I TAKE PRIOR TO SNOWFALL?

You should surely do a nice autumn maintenance routine before any snowfall. Eliminating natural materials like leaves, branches, etc., are crucial.
